ITINERARY FOR SAN JUAN ISLANDS:
September 7: Fly into SEA airport, landing no later than 12:00. You’ll be picked up from the airport at an arranged time around 12:45pm. Once we have all arrived, we will head north towards our first stop on our Salish Sea adventure. We will snag a tasty lunch along the way - depending on traffic and how hungry everyone is, we’ll either grab something quick for the road or perhaps stop at an Ethiopian hidden gem or Pike Place Market! We will travel for about 3 hours, not including lunch, until reaching Anacortes, where we’ll settle into our hotel and then get to know each other better at our group welcome dinner.
September 8: After breakfast, we’re heading into the San Juan Islands with our first ferry ride of the trip! We’ll head to the ferry terminal where we’ll get in line to drive on and entertain ourselves as we wait for our departure. The ferry ride to Orcas Island will take around 1-1.5 hrs. Once we arrive on the island, we’ll head to the town of Eastsound where we can grab a snack and you’ll have some free time before we check-in to our accommodations. We’ll wrap up the day with an early dinner at a nearby restaurant before we have one more late night adventure - bioluminescence kayaking!! The San Juan’s are one of the best places to see bioluminescence and we’re planning this close to the new moon for the best chance at a brighter sighting. We’ll head out on a 2 hour adventure down the coastline to see this natural phenomenon in real life!
September 9: After our late night, we’ll have the option to sleep in a bit before getting breakfast and grabbing lunch to go from a deli or market before we head out on our main activity of the day - whale watching!! The best months to see whales in the San Juans are April-October (particularly Orcas). But, our timing is perfect because August-October is also the best time to catch humpback whales!! If we’re super lucky, we might also catch some minkes or grays. We’ll be spending a large chunk of the day on a boat for a private charter so we have more time to explore areas like the Strait of Juan de Fuca and have a greater chance of seeing humpbacks and grey whales, plus local Orca pods. After our whale watching adventure, we’ll head back to our rooms to freshen up and head out for dinner.
September 10: We’re island hopping today! After breakfast, we’ll be heading to the ferry dock for a trip to Lopez Island where we will explore Lopez Village, watch for wildlife at Shark Reef Sanctuary, and have a tree canopy climbing adventure! During our tree canopy adventure, we’ll be climbing giant old-growth trees 100-200 feet into the air for incredible views and a unique perspective of the islands that very few people see. You don’t need any experience, but you will essentially be doing squats as you climb. We’ll plan to wrap up the day with dinner and an evening ferry back to our home base on Orcas Island.
September 11: Pack up for an all-day adventure to yet another amazing island - Sucia Island, a remote island that’s only accessible by private boat. As a Marine State Park, Sucia Island is the perfect spot to look for wildlife (such as eagles, osprey, river otters, seals, sea lions, possible whales, etc.), and check out the caves, fossil beds, and sandstone formations on the island. We’ll bring along lunch and have a blast on our tour where we’ll kayak, explore tide pools, check out beaches, and take a short hike. After we return to Orcas, we’ll freshen up and reconnect for dinner nearby.
September 12: Our trip to the San Juan Islands wouldn’t be complete without a trip to San Juan Island itself. This morning, we’ll head to the ferry dock once again. This time we’re leaving the vans behind as walk-on passengers to spend the day exploring the famous Friday Harbor and looping the island on the Jolly Trolley. After our day of adventure, we’ll head back to Orcas Island to wrap up our final night together with one last group dinner.
September 13: Departure day starts bright and early. But the good news is, we should catch the sunrise on the first ferry of the day off the island. We’ll head back to Anacortes, grab a quick bite for breakfast, then make our way back to Sea-Tac where you can catch a flight at 2 pm or later (our estimated time of return to the airport is noon, but could vary a touch with traffic so please plan accordingly) or continue your PNW adventure on your own.
