Northern Vietnam itinerary:
March 31: land in Hanoi by 3pm if possible. Check into hotel and intro dinner.
April 1: Spend the morning on a historical/market tour of the wonderful city of Hanoi and enjoy a food tour as well! We will eat lots of good food today and surely get our steps in. We will board a luxury overnight sleeper train to Lao Cai at around 10pm. You’ll arrive into Lao Cai at 6am.
April 2: We will enjoy a nice relaxing breakfast and then hop into a minibus heading for the mountains of Sapa. The drive will be gorgeous and we will pass villages inhabited by Vietnam's ethnic minorities. We’ll stop at Sa Seng and Hang Đá - both villages of the Black Hmong people whom we will be interacting with for these 2 days. We’ll have a picnic lunch there, followed by a guided tour of the villages. We will then hike (easy) to various viewpoints that offer sweeping vistas of the lush Mường Hoa Valley. Finally, we’ll make our way to Sapa, Once we check into our hotel, we’ll have free time, and then dinner.
April 3: Wake up early and eat breakfast. Today is a half-day easy hike through the breathtaking Sapa Valley. The scenery will likely be stunning! We’ll hike along a narrow trail through fields, cross the Mường Hoa River, and arrive at the Black Hmong village of Lao Chai. After a traditional village lunch, we’ll trek through a bamboo forest to Giang Ta Chai, home to the Red Dao ethnic minority. One of Vietnam's oldest groups, the Red Dao settled here before the Hmong. The day ends with a visit to a nearby waterfall, and then we transfer back to Sapa. Dinner, and then we will transfer to the Lao Cai Railway Station to catch an overnight train to Hanoi. The train leaves at 9:30pm and we arrive in Hanoi at 5:30am.
April 4th: It’s another early morning, but we will enjoy a beautiful breakfast and then take a 2 hour drive to Ha Long Bay. Here we will get on a luxury boat for an overnight stay! Upon loading the boat, we will have a wonderful lunch, go kayaking, enjoy the pool and upper deck and see what other activities the cruise has to offer. Dinner is always a delight, and honestly this cruise along the gorgeous karst formations Is always one of the favorite parts of Into the Wild’s trips to Vietnam.
April 5th: Sleep in! Breakfast and a leisurely morning as we sail to our dock, and head back to Hanoi. Upon arrival in Hanoi, we will have some free time before a cooking class.
April 6th: Breakfast, and then we will head out for a day trip to Ninh Binh. Today you’ll visit the King temple of Hoa Lu and see the old capital. We will head back to Hanoi for our final dinner together.
