east Java and Komodo Islands: October 11-18, 2026

Into the Wild is a chance to take a moment for you. To dive deep into your wild woman self. To rediscover the wonder and beauty of both earth’s nature and YOUR nature. To gain the experience of enjoying Nature’s wildness with other women.

Welcome to Indonesia! This trip is one for the books. A true adventure through East Java to see some of the most incredible sights in the world, a road trip for the hearty travel appetite (waterfalls you won’t belive- volcanic craters to blow the mind!). You’ll be ready after seeing the sights of East Java for a rest day in Bali at a peaceful resort. And finally, you’ll fly to Komodo Island to experience a 3 day, 2 night boat trip through crystal clear waters, visiting multiple islands with unique wildlife including the famous Komodo dragons in their natural habitat. Relax on the boat at night and adventure every day with short treks and swimming/snorkel time.

Come unite in Indonesia, explore this beautiful, wild earth, and join Hannah as your trip leader, taking in the beauty of it all with your new adventure friends.

This retreat contains a lot of adventure, long days (especially on the front end) and some very early risings. It’s truly the adventure retreat of your dreams with one relaxing day stuck in there for you to get some rest and then get back at it. You must be able to walk up and down stairs, flexibility in the legs, ability to walk on slippery surfaces and river crossings, slopes, and have a moderate level of hiking.

Ijen Crater

Join us and rediscover your inner wild woman! Do you love adventure? Is this wonderful part of Indonesia on your bucket list? This trip is for YOU!

Cost for the East Java and Komodo Island trip is $2699 per person for 7 nights. All lodging, transportation, and all meals and excursions during the retreat are included. Read below for instructions on how to book your flights.

NOTE: This is one of those rare trips where- if you don’t bring a friend (we love that you come alone or bring a friend!) you may want to grab a single room supplement- as beds on the Komodo Sailing trip are shared double sized beds. You are free of course to buddy up with a new friend upon arrival, but this is your PSA that on the sailing trip, beds must be shared. For the rest of the trip, it’s 2 per room, each in their own bed, unless you buy the single room supplement.

ITINERARY: (and a note about flights below it- Very important to read)

October 11: Arrival in Surabaya. Arrive at Juanda International Airport in Surabaya. You must arrive before 12pm- as our driver will be picking us up at noon. If your flights don’t jive with this, plan on coming one day early please! After meeting up, we will head towards Lumajang City, with lunch on the way. We will check into the hotel and have a local dinner featuring traditional Javanese cuisine. Rest up tonight because for the next 4 days, there is a lot of car travel and so many incredible sights.

October 12: Our day begins with breakfast from hotel and start to exploring Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, one of the most stunning waterfalls in Java. Known for its unique curtain-like water flow and multiple smaller falls, Tumpak Sewu’s beauty will take your breath away. The trek to the waterfall involves following a river up the canyon and crossing the river at one point (make sure to wear proper trekking shoes that you don’t mind getting wet, as there are ladders and river crossings and slippery paths). After enjoying the waterfall, We’ll take time to relax and have lunch. We’ll then continue the journey to Cemoro Lawang, near Mount Bromo, with a drive of approximately 4 hours. Upon arrival, check in to our hotel, have a group dinner, and relax overnight in preparation for the next day's adventure.

October 13: Start the day early at 2:00 AM to prepare for Mount Bromo stargazing and the Milky Way view. After witnessing the stunning night sky, enjoy the famous sunrise over the Bromo landscape, with views of Mount Batok, Mount Bromo, and Gunung Semeru. Following the sunrise, take a 4WD ride across the Sand Sea to Poten, a Hindu temple. From there, you’ll  take a 3 km hike to the base of Mount Bromo to get close-up views of the crater.**Note: this is not a solitary experience and there will be a lot of people with our group!**  After exploring Mount Bromo, continue to the Whispering Sands for more scenic views. Return to your hotel for breakfast, shower, and checkout. Afterward, you'll be transferred to a hotel in Bondowoso, with a 3-hour drive and a stop for lunch. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy dinner with our group and a relaxing evening.

October 14: Starting at 12:00 AM, we will check out from our hotel and drive to the Paltuding trailhead for an amazing morning at Ijen Crater (about 90 minutes). From there, trek approximately 1-1.5 hours to the crater rim, where you’ll witness the spectacular turquoise sulfuric crater lake. We’ll also have the chance to observe sulfur miners carrying heavy loads of sulfur despite the harsh conditions. Enjoy the sunrise at the crater before heading back down. After Ijen Crater, we will drive to Ketapang Harbor and take the ferry to Bali (about 1.5 hours). Rest in Bali for the afternoon and night at an amazing resort, catch up on sleep and indulge in great food and a massage.

October 15: A low key day: Drive to Denpasar Airport and fly to Labuan Bajo (Komodo International Airport). Arrive and settle into the hotel- Group dinner and sleep.

October 16: Begin 3D2N Komodo exploration! Today we will settle onto our boat for the next 3 days, and start off with a trip to Kelor Island where we will do a short but steep hike to a viewpoint over the Komodo National Park. Then, we’ll snorkel at Manjarite Island, and watch sunset on Kalong Island. An amazing day! The boat crew will prepare an amazing dinner for us on deck.

October 17: Day 2 of our boat tour of Komodo Islands starts with trekking at Padar Island for sunrise! We’ll beat most of the crowds for this amazing view. Then, we will head out to Pink beach for snorkeling and sunbathing on the shores. Afterwards, we hop over to Komodo Island to see the dragons and do some hiking and exploring around. More snorkeling after lunch at Taka Makassar,  and closer to sunset we will once again swim and snorkel at Manta Point. Known for its year-round gatherings of manta rays, this is a shallow, nutrient-rich area where mantas are often seen feeding and at their cleaning stations, making it a highlight stop! Dinner will follow on deck again, and sleep.

October 18: Day 3 of Komodo Boat tour- we will snorkel and swim at Kanawa Island, get cleaned up, and be dropped off back at Labuan Baio (where the Komodo airport is)!  Fly after 5pm back to Denpasar OR to Surabaya Airport. People this way can choose RT tickets from their home to Bali (Denpasar) or Java (Surabaya).

NOTE: This is one of those rare trips where- if you don’t bring a friend (we love that you come alone or bring a friend!) you may want to grab a single room supplement- as beds on the Komodo Sailing trip are shared double sized beds. You are free of course to buddy up with a new friend upon arrival, but this is your PSA that on the sailing trip (2 nights), beds must be shared. For the rest of the trip, it’s 2 per room, each in their own bed, unless you buy the single room supplement.

NOTE: Here is some guidance on how to book your flights for this trip. You can do one of two methods:

  1. Buy a round trip ticket from your home airport to Bali, Denpasar International airport. You’ll then buy a one way ticket to Surabaya to meet up with the group at the airport on October 11th before noon. This one way ticket will probably cost you less than $100 and often is only $40. On October 18th, after 5pm, you’ll need a one way ticket from Komodo Island airport to Bali, Denpasar International (another inexpensive ticket, one way). You’ll then fly home from Bali.

  2. Buy a round trip ticket from your home to Surabaya, Indonesia. You’ll meet up with the group on October 11th and enjoy the trip. On October 18th, the group trip ends at noon on Komodo Island. You’ll need to buy a one way ticket from Komodo International Airport to Surabaya after 5pm. And then you’ll take your flight home from there.

Into The Wild Adventure is requiring its trip attendees to provide proof of travel insurance purchase for this trip.
